Kris Bryant Signs Record Deal

Friday was the day of deals for the Cubs arbitration-eligible players. Instead of working out contracts in arbitration hearings, the Cubs sided with signing Kris Bryant, Justin Wilson, Kyle Hendricks, Addison Russell, and Tommy La Stella to one year deals. Justin Grimm is the only eligible player to not sign a new deal so far.

The most notable of those one year contracts was with the former MVP Kris Bryant. KB set a record with his $10.85 million deal which will go down as the highest deal for any first year arbitration eligible player in the history of baseball. The deal is $850,000 more than the previous record set by Ryan Howard when he signed his deal back in 2008 as a 28 year old.

The news on the deal comes soon after the report of another record arbitration deal made by the Toronto Blue Jays and their third baseman Josh Donaldson. Those two hooked up to set the record for highest price deal to avoid arbitration in the history of baseball regardless of which year of arbitration the player was set for. The $23 million dollar contract is for the final year of his team control as The Bringer of Rain is set to become a part of that ridiculous free agent class next offseason.

In addition to the Kris Bryant deal, the remaining deals to avoid arbitration include:

Justin Wilson: $4.25 million
Kyle Hendricks: $4.175 million
Addison Russell: $3.2 million
Tommy La Stella: $950,000
