Major League Camp Cut to 40 Players

Another week has gone by and more cuts have been made as we get closer to Opening Day. On Tuesday, the Cubs cut nine more players from the big league camp. Of the list, two were non-roster invitees and the others were all players that are currently occupying spots on the 40-man roster. With the way this roster is set up, there have not been any surprises when it has come to roster cuts and we will likely not see any surprises at all between now and Opening Day in Miami. Each of the players cut on Tuesday will start the year in Triple-A Iowa and will likely spend most of the season there.

The non-roster invitees that were sent over to Minor League Camp were infielder Chesny Young and outfielder Jacob Hannemann.

Young will be one of the many utility players that the I-Cubs will send out there on a daily basis and will look to rebound from a sub-par 2017. Hannemann will have to work to make his way back onto the 40-man roster after spending some time with the Seattle Mariners during September last year.

Of the 40-man roster players that were cut, six of them were pitchers. Righties Luke Farrell, Cory Mazzoni, Alec Mills, and Jen-Ho Tseng along with lefties Dario Alvarez and Rob Zastryzny were all cut as well super-utility man David Bote.

Farrell, Mazzoni, and Alvarez were all picked up in the off-season as free agents and will be used as bullpen depth this season. Alvarez will likely be one of the first arms to come up due to a Major League injury.

Mills, Tseng, and Zastryzny are considered Minor League veterans at this point in their careers and have all found themselves on Cubs prospect lists at one point. Mills and Tseng will be the first guys to get calls to the bigs to make spot starts and the new Big Z will work to make his way back to Chicago for a third straight season.

David Bote has absolutely mashed the ball this spring after raking during his time in the Arizona Fall League and putting together a great year in 2017. He will be one of the first position players called up to Chicago this year after proving that he is the real deal and more of a prospect than many publications thought he would be.

As we move forward with Spring Training, we should expect at least one more round of cuts.
