The Cubs seemed to have inked the yearly contract for an Iowa first baseman as they brought in Corban Joseph on a minor league contract on Friday. Joseph, the brother of MLB catcher Caleb Joseph, has had quite an interesting ride in his professional career.
He has put up great numbers as a minor leaguer, resulting in the priveledge of spending some time on Major League rosters with the Yankees, Orioles, Athletics, Giants, and Pirates. Unfortunately, he has never produced enough at the plate to justify any team keeping him up on their Major League team and the result is his trip around the United States.
Joseph’s 2019 minor league stats: .371/.421/.585 in 425 plate appearances
Joseph’s career Major League stats: .170/.213/.261 in 94 plate appearances.
While he has played all over the infield in his career, this appears to be a contract to follow in the footsteps of Jim Adduci in 2019 and Efren Navarro in 2018 with the Iowa Cubs having no clear first baseman on the roster quite yet.
The I-Cubs lineup appears to be all but set as we are just a couple weeks out from the beginning of Spring Training.
