The Cubs wrapped up the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft with the 147th pick, and selected Koen Moreno, a pitcher out of Panther Creek High School in North Carolina. He closes out a class that also features Ed Howard, Burl Carraway, Jordan Nwogu, and Luke Little.
This is the first and only pick of the Cubs draft class that I was not familiar with coming into the draft. Here is a breakdown of some rapid-fire reaction to Moreno.
Physicality
This pick is much different than the others in the draft class as Moreno is a high schooler that still has to fill out his body a bit. He stands at 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds and has very athletic movements from the mound. He played multiple sports in high school, which is something you love to see from a pitcher as it makes you think he has the ability to repeat his delivery very easily.
Tools
Moreno has a fastball that has touched all the way up to 94 MPH but sits down in the low-90s right now. Carlos Collazo of Baseball America was quick to point out his tumbling changeup, a skill that I absolutely love to see coming from high school pitchers.
Statistics
The righty found himself on the outside looking into the top draft prospects list at MLB Pipeline but was actually a top 150 prospect for Baseball America. That is a great get for the Cubs in the 5th round from a high school guy. In his senior year, he put up a 1.62 ERA with 80 strikeouts over 47.2 innings.
Takeaway
Moreno is currently committed to East Carolina University but I can’t imagine there will be signability issues. With this shortened draft, teams typically aren’t drafting players they don’t feel like they can sign. In addition, I think the signing bonus slots should work out well that there could be a little extra money to slide Moreno’s way to keep him away from ECU.
That wraps up today’s activity and I’ve gotta say, I love this draft class. It is so much different than what we have seen from the Cubs in past years and it is a jolt of excitement into the system. Be on the lookout for more content on these picks over at Cubs Insider later tonight.
