Mid-Week Buzz: Hermosillo is Fun, Caissie & Herz Are Elite, New MLB Draft Needed

What I’m Reading

• Michael Hermosillo has been one of my favorite storylines to follow this year. After tearing it up in Iowa, he got the call to play for his favorite team. Meghan Montemurro had a terrific piece in the Trib about the slugging outfielder.

• I think it’s actually gotten more and more fun to do the Weekly Farm Reports over at CI as the season has worn on. Some prospects are really starting to come into their own and have played spoiler to those who doubted them after rough starts to the year.

What I’m Watching

• Brennen Davis and the oppo wall are a combination for the ages.

• Rich has his eyes/camera on all the new guys down in Mesa. I’ll always share first peaks at these guys; I think it’s so cool.

• If Yonathan Perlaza can start hitting like this from the right side of the plate and while putting up the insane numbers he’s recording over the last couple months, he will officially become A Guy.

• The Smokies won their game on Marquee in the most Little League way possible. Can’t say I’ve ever seen this from a game above, like, JV high school ball.

• Yohendrick Pinango TO THE MOON. And he knew it.

• Chase Strumpf in the first 3 weeks of August: 358/.452/.642.

• Yeah, Silk has struggled this year. No, I’m not worried. This swing is a beautiful thing.

What I’m Tweeting

• The MLB Draft needs re-worked and although I might not have articulated it perfectly, I did my best in tweet form. Basically, the team that wins the World Series gets pick #30. The teams that get bounced in the Wild Card round pick #22 and #21. The team that *just* missed out on the final Wild Card spot picks #1. The team with the worst record in baseball picks #20.

• Some of the relievers in the system have been so damn good this year that we just kinda… forget about them. Continued dominance should be talked more highly of, not thrown away as the norm.

What’s Catching My Eye

• Owen Caissie has some pretty good company when it comes to the numbers he put up while in the Arizona Complex League.

• More from Bryan highlighting absurd numbers that Cubs prospects are putting up: DJ Herz has legitimately put together one of the best full-season performances by a starting pitcher….ever.
